Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is a 26-bed acute paediatric hospital situated in Luang Prabang Lao PDR. It is operated by a New York based non-profit organization Friends Without A Border that is dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to the children in remote areas of Southeast Asia. In 2015 the hospital was opened on the same campus as the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital and it has been developing its services since then. LFHC is a teaching hospital offering emergency, inpatient, outpatient and surgical services to babies and children throughout Northern Lao. Limited on-site radiology, pathology and pharmacy together with a homecare program complement these clinical activities. A major goal of this hospital is to promote the clinical learning and professional development of the local staff such that key positions within the hospital are progressively filled by a well-trained (through the support of skilled volunteers) and dedicated local workforce.
Position Summary
The Biomedical Technician’s primary function is to train our lao technician in the field of biomedical engineering and to develop & implement policies and procedures for the upkeep of the biomedical equipment. Including:
- Review the policies and procedures for basic machine maintenance including inventory, schedules, and checklists, and update as necessary
- Training of doctors, nurses, and other medical staff to understand how their good usage practices can also contribute to the longevity of a machine’s life
- Liaise with the biomedical technology team at the Provincial Hospital to assess capabilities and possible sharing of tasks
- Build biomedical skills to our local engineer staff
Skills/Experience
- Degree in biomedical engineering
- At least two years’ experience as a biomedical technician
- Experience in development of policies and procedures or the updating thereof
- Experience in a low resource setting environment desirable
Salary and Benefits
This volunteer position is open immediately, with a preferred 4-month minimum commitment. A small monthly allowance can be provided to help cover some basic costs such as food & housing (but not flights) for commitments of 2+ months.
