Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is a 61-bed acute pediatric hospital situated in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. It is operated by a New York based non-profit organization, Friends Without A Border, which is dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to children in remote areas of Southeast Asia. In 2015 the hospital was opened on the same campus as the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital and has been developing its services since then. LFHC is a teaching hospital offering emergency, inpatient, outpatient and surgical services to neonates and children throughout Northern Laos. Limited on-site radiology, pathology and pharmacy together with a homecare program complement these clinical activities. A major goal of this hospital is to promote clinical learning and professional development of the local staff such that key positions in the hospital are progressively filled by a well-trained and dedicated local workforce.

Position Summary

The Nurse Educator is primarily responsible for the education, training and development of the LFHC nursing team. This includes the development and delivery of education and training, implementation of education curriculums, coordination of external training and development of trainers amongst the local nursing team. This role involves working in close collaboration with the Lao Nurse Educator and senior members of the nursing team to promote the creation of Lao-taught educational material. Promoting the sustainability of the education program is vital to this role, as is ensuring that material is delivered by Lao staff. In addition to this the Nurse Educator works in close collaboration with the Nursing Director, assisting with the mentoring, clinical supervision and support of the nursing team. The role includes clinical shifts, in a mentoring capacity.

Specific Duties

• Develop and deliver education and training opportunities for the nursing team and external health professionals and students

• Assist in the development and implementation of Lao led training programs and courses

• Mentor the Lao nurse educator and assist them in their development as a teacher

• Assist in reviewing the clinical performance of the nursing staff, focusing specifically on the identification and support of staff requiring further education and assistance

• Liaise with the Medical Education Director in the coordination of joint medical and nursing education

• Liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team (eg. laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, outreach) to both involve them in the development of training and provide them with the opportunity to attend relevant training

• Assist in the development of both nursing specific and hospital wide medical policies and protocols

• Facilitate training by external individuals and groups, including nursing volunteers and course providers

• Organize participation in clinical placements and courses in external facilities

• Assist in grant proposal and report writing and provide statistics and photographs to be utilized for both promotional and educational purposes

Qualifications

• An internationally recognized university degree in nursing is essential

• Registration to practice nursing in the candidate’s home country

• Experience of working in healthcare in low to middle income countries, essential

• Experience caring for high acuity/critically unwell pediatric patients, strongly preferred

• International experience in providing pediatric nursing care, strongly preferred

• Experience in teaching nurses in a developing setting with English as a second language, preferred

• Ability to interact with people from various countries and backgrounds with tact, diplomacy and poise

• Demonstrated leadership ability with strong organizational and communication skills

• Commitment to providing compassionate and nurturing care to our patients and families, while achieving the strategic and operational goals of LFHC

• Flexibility and ability to work effectively in a varied and dynamic team
